Law firm ethics vis-a-vis whether they can represent an entity that owns them?

Of course they can...self-representation is actually guaranteed by the Constitution. There are no laws or any ethics rules that preclude "in house" counsel from representing the firm they work for...and, in actuality, that's what they're there hired to do.
